And how do you refuse anyone when he looks at you with those huge innocent eyes….
But refuse I had to! It is very difficult to arrange for transportation (safe ) for animals in Delhi and I guess that is the case in most parts of India. Pets get lost all the time and there have been many cases of injury (sometimes grave enough to lead to death) caused during the journey. While traveling in a train, you can’t carry a pet in passenger compartment (unless you book a coupe in AC first class) and there is no guarantee of safety in the goods compartment. A friend of mine had shifted from Pune to Delhi and lost her Golden retriever somewhere in the journey. She was heart broken. Flights are no better. I remember reading a account where an M.P (Member of parliament) had shifted base and lost his dog (as in, the poor thing died) in the journey. He filed a case against the authorities but then, his dog never came back.
I think it is something which needs serious deliberation. There should be better homes for pets, better facilities and street dogs and cats should not be thus neglected. I think from now on, I’ll write a post on street dogs every week.
